Concerts from the Great Hall

The Music Committee offers members and visitors concerts recorded in the Great Hall and mounted on Youtube for easy access:

Kevin Ahfat was named in 2018 as one of CBC Music’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30.” This piano recital demonstrates his musicality and his skill. He includes a Bach Prelude, in B minor, counterpointed by a Piano Sonata by Alban Berg and a set of chronological variations for solo piano, Ad augusta per angusta (Through Difficulties to Greatness) by Alberto Hemsi.

This recital is dedicated to the memory of Judy Simmonds, a member of the Music Committee and supported of “Music in the Great Hall”.

Annie Li is a champion of contemporary music. A recent performance was of Michael Finnissy’s epic five-and-a-half-hour solo piano cycle, The History of Photography in Sound, in Trinity Laban’s New Lights Festival, June 2019. Her program includes Douglas Finch’s Variations on a Theme by Brahms, and Nocturnes Set II by David Jaeger, along with works by Bach and Chopin.

Her recital is dedicated to the memory of John Lawson, a Life Member of the Club and a huge supporter of all things musical.

Pianist Jean-Luc Therrien performs a program that is both musically and technically interesting, encompassing music by Canadian composers Jaques Hétu and David Wildmann, Debussy’s  Suite Bergamasque, two of the  Préludes, Book 1, L’Isle joyeuse, and ending with Liszt’s challenging Méphisto Waltz.

Tristan Savella treats us to an interesting and beautifully balanced recital of piano music. In his program are Haydn’s Sonata in D major, Hob. XVI, two sets by Alexander Scriabin, Deux Poèmes, op. 32, and his Sonata no. 2 in G-sharp minor (“Sonata-Fantasy”), op. 19 and  works by Debussy’s from Images Book II.

These concerts were recorded in the Great Hall on December 22, 2021.

“Nothing is so beautiful as spring …”  Pianist Stephen Runge plays for us a program celebrating spring and nature, with selections from Schumann’s Waldszenen, works by Chabrier, Rachmaninov, Fauré, Mompou, Granados, Jocelyne Morlock’s The Jack Pine, after Tom Thomson’s painting, and Liszt’s transcription of Schubert’s The Trout. Recorded in the Great Hall on June 11.

Pianist Sheng Cai plays a recital reserved for Club members. His program includes Tchaikovsky’s Sonata in G major (“Grande”), op. 37, and Rachmaninov’s Moments musicaux, op. 16. Recorded in the Great Hall on March 15.  Please login to enjoy this concert.

Violinist Jessy Kim and pianist Benjamin Smith playing Bach’s Sonata for Solo Violin in G minor, BWV 1001, the Varley Suite by Stephen Chatman and two works by Brahms: Violin Sonata in G major, op. 78 and Scherzo WoO 2, recorded in the Great Hall on March 15.

Alexander Panizza playing Beethover’s Appassionata Sonata and Chopin’s Ballad #1 in G minor, and Andante Spianato & Grand Polonaise, recorded in the Great Hall on November 17.

Benjamin Smith in a recital including Handel’s The Harmonious Blacksmith and Suite #4 in E minor, Beethoven’s Sonata  #30 in E major, Idylle in F sharp major by  Alexander Glazunov and Forgotten Melodies (First Cycle), by Nikolai Medtner, recorded in the Great Hall on November 17.

Younggun Kim in a concert of music by Poulenc, Albéniz, Chopin, Bach, Chopin, and Astor Piazzolla, recorded in the Great Hall on September 20, 2020.
